Our Story

We’ve Been Building and Renovating lives Since 2003

At the heart of SUWA work is addressing the issue of injustice and poverty in our communities either through Research and Advocacy, Sexual Gender Based Violence, HIV and AIDS response with other related health issues or Peace building initiatives. Our targets groups are the poor, vulnerable and marginalized groups in other to empower them to change their own communities and lives. SUWA believes that human action is responsible for the underlying causes of poverty; communities need to be empowered to understand the underlying issues so that decisions affecting their lives are made responsibly and fairly. Every human being has a right to essential services and equality for all that is why we do recognize that we need to speak and act on behalf of the poor.

Our Mission

SUWA exists to equip individuals, families, communities and institutions to develop, manage, mitigate and sustain appropriate responses to bring about healthy life, reconciliation, peaceful co-existence and transformation in societies

How we work

Every training has action plans drawn up by every participant stating how he/she will utilise the training. Follow up; mentoring takes place from 3-6 months after training. Activity reports are written and documented as well as Monthly and Quarterly reports.

Peace Building

SUWA has designed and implemented interfaith peace building initiatives in Jos since 2011 and specially targets the Youth who are the “foot Soldiers. In order to achieve this, SUWA has been in partnership with JAMA’ATU NASRIL ISLAM (JNI), so as to reach people of all groups and to work for peace. The earlier intervention saw SUWA setting up an Interfaith Peace committee that meets quarterly and has since been working with the committee to achieve our objectives of peace building in North Jos and its environs.

Peace Ambassadors

We have 45 Peace Ambassadors from the various communities of intervention and have had their capacity built to mitigate against any conflict within their communities, the presence of Peace Ambassadors, in the communities have reduced tension, reprisal attacks including violence conflicts. Their age ranges are between 18 -35 years.

Financial Empowermet

SUWA work has now expanded to include income generating activities with self- help groups or Village Saving Loan Associations (VSLA) and vocational skills for some targeted youth which has proven to be of benefit to the beneficiaries (some are into Animal Husbandry, some leather works, shoes and bags etc) and has contributed to moving these youths from violence. 65 youth benefited from the various vocational skills training in the past two years and are having sustainable income.
